About the position

Maternity Today (MT) is currently searching for a Volunteer Board Member to join the executive team.


The Volunteer Board Member will posses solid character traits and personal integrity, you will be an active member with tolerance to differing viewpoints and communicate honesty with sensitivity, must be amiable, responsive, and patient. With this position comes understanding of MT’s mission and providing financial oversight



Responsibilities:


  • Participate actively in making decisions on behalf of MT and exercising best judgement

  • Place MT’s interest before any personal or professional interests

  • Ensure that the organization complies with the applicable federal, state, and local laws

  • Support and participate in the activities of MT including fundraising activities, community education and other initiatives

  • Maintain electronic and paper records ensuring information is organized and accessible

  • Attending meetings and actively participating in committees


We are in the early stages of revamping strategies, structures and procedures so this role will be busy and expanding. You will have the opportunity to create new processes geared towards organizational growth and development.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in Social Sciences, Political Science, Humanities and relevant education and experience

  • The Volunteer Board member is expected to possess all the qualifications of a Member and additional leadership abilities

  • Proven ability to undertake organizational strategic planning and evaluation

  • An understanding of governmental values and a commitment to working within the government’s accountability structure

  • Knowledge of, and displayed commitment to, sound governance practices

  • Familiarity with basic research methods and reporting techniques

  • At least a 3 years commitment, depending on the guidance of the governance and Human Resources committee, this position description will be fully evaluated by the governance and Human Resources committee and updates and recommendation to the Board for consideration and approval.

  • This position can be done virtually from anywhere in Canada.

  • Expectations regarding a time commitment are in the range of 8-10 hours per month on average.

About the organization

Maternity Today is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to sharing evidence and resources with communities, health-care workers, and midwives in developing countries. Our office is in Ottawa, Canada but receives support from global health experts and midwives around the world. Our key priority areas include improving midwifery profession and institutional delivery, newborn adolescent health, community mobilization and advocacy for gender equality and adolescent health.


As part of our work, we also empower passionate health-care professionals to advocate and improve policies that enhance the quality of maternal and child health care in developing countries.
